The Church

In the Parish, the Church is where you see where you stand between Humanity and Bloodlust, face the trials that wake your powers, and take your vows.

Humanity and Bloodlust

Every vampire feels two pulls. Humanity is the restraint and mercy you carried over from your mortal life. Bloodlust is the hunger that wants everything, and takes it. Neither is the good side and neither is stronger: they simply fight, and choose, differently.

Your alignment is a score from +100 (Humanity) to −100 (Bloodlust):
• +90 to +100: Unfallen
• +70 to +89: Protector
• +30 to +69: Restrained
• −29 to +29: Unbound, on neither path
• −30 to −69: Predator
• −70 to −89: Ravager
• −90 to −100: Bloodfiend

A silver candle beside a vampire's name means Humanity, a crimson drop Bloodlust. Unbound vampires show neither.

How it moves

• Your choices. The story quests move you furthest. Each decision counts once, for good; taking a quest up again never counts it twice. See the Quest Log.
• Prayer. Once a night at the Church, pray toward Humanity or Bloodlust for 1 point, up to 5 in any 7 days (6 if your coven holds the Parish). Each prayer counts for 7 days after you make it: there is no weekly reset day. Prayer alone takes you no further than ±29, but it can always bring you back toward the middle.
• The hunt. A few choices on expeditions move you 1 point, up to 3 in any 7 days (counted the same way), as far as ±49: sparing or feeding on the fledgling behind the barricade, cutting down or drinking from the hunter in the Gibbet Cage.
• The Mirror Draught, the Gold Vial, turns your score to its opposite (+40 becomes −40), at most once a month.
• Arena fights and other battles never change your alignment.

Powers and trials

Each path has five powers. A power comes within reach when your score passes its mark (30, 45, 60, 75 and 90, either way). You then win it at the Church by facing that tier's trial, a fight in the crypt: one Action a try, at full health, with no lasting wounds. Humanity faces Your Hunger; Bloodlust faces Your Conscience.

Humanity
• Mend (30): below 50% health, restore 5% of it.
• Blood Ward (45): when struck, a ward soaks 9% of the next 3 blows.
• Retribution (60): turn 3% of each blow back on your attacker.
• Renewal (75): below 60% health, heal a little each round for 5 rounds.
• Last Stand (90): once a battle, survive a killing blow, on borrowed time.

Bloodlust
• Siphon (30): every few blows, strike harder and drink 30% of it.
• Hemorrhage (45): your blows open wounds that bleed for 4 rounds.
• Wither (60): your blows sap the foe, so they hit 20% softer for a while.
• Blood Frenzy (75): the more you bleed, the harder you hit (up to +7%).
• Devour (90): against a foe below 30% health, hit harder and drink.

Unbound vampires fight Steady: +4% damage dealt and 4% less taken.

Your powers fight for you everywhere: the Arena and Ranked, Coterie and Coven War battles, sieges, expeditions and hunting duels, and your special in the Ossuary. The further you are from the middle, the stronger they are, by less each step (up to +11% at ±100). Powers that heal, shield or hit harder share limits and weaken each time they fire in a fight, and a long fight brings Battle Fatigue (from round 30, healing and shielding fade), so neither path can outlast or outhit forever.

Drift back below a power's mark and it sleeps; return and it wakes again, with no second trial.

Marks of the path

Yours for good, even if you change sides later:
• Silver eyes at +50, Crimson eyes at −50
• The title Unfallen at +90, Bloodfiend at −90
• The Ethereal manifestation at +100, the Bloodfiend manifestation at −100
• The Redeemed or Bloodcursed familiar dye for winning your path's third trial
• The title Dual-Natured for reaching both +90 and −90

The Hall of Fame keeps boards for the vampires who have held Unfallen and Bloodfiend the longest. The old Light and Dark standings, from before October 2026, are kept in its Archive.

Vows

• Buy a ring for 10,000 gold, then propose. You may have one proposal out at a time; if it is declined or withdrawn, the ring comes back.
• An accepted proposal is announced in chat.
• Either partner can divorce at any time, for free.

Karma, the hearts on forum posts and profiles, is something else entirely; see the Hall of Balance and Premium and Blood Opals.
