Games Like Torn

Torn is one of the best-known browser RPGs around. If you love it, or want something in the same spirit with a different setting, here is what to look for and how Vampire Genesis compares. A note up front: we make Vampire Genesis, so weigh our view accordingly.

What Torn is

According to its website, Torn is a text-based online RPG set in Torn City, a dark criminal underworld, and a massively multiplayer game with thousands of active players, playable on desktop, phone or tablet. Its site highlights factions, companies you can start and staff with other players, jobs, travel abroad, racing, marriage and attacking other players, all running on its own game engine.

So a game "like Torn" is a persistent browser game (PBBG) where your character grows over months, other players are both your rivals and your economy, and groups fight for power.

What to look for

  • A real player economy: trading, markets and jobs that depend on other people.
  • Groups that matter: factions, gangs or covens with wars that have stakes.
  • PvP: attacks, rivalries and revenge.
  • Long-term growth: stats and gear you build for years, with no resets.
  • Fair monetization: a game where money can't buy power.

Vampire Genesis

Vampire Genesis is built on the same ideas, with vampires instead of criminals. It is a free PBBG with no resets, from a line of browser games that began with Vampire Freaks: The Game in 2004. Where it overlaps with Torn, and where it differs:

  • Covens instead of factions. Raise a coven from level 1 to 30 and fight territory wars for five of the eight districts on the city map.
  • PvP with a ladder. Attack other vampires in the arena, climb the monthly Ranked ladder, or fight everyone at once in the Pit.
  • An economy run by players. Gathering and crafting professions that depend on each other, a player market and a stock exchange.
  • Racing. Night Derby hearse races against other players.
  • Beyond the familiar parts: over 160 familiars to catch, breed and battle, hunting expeditions into four wild wards, and a pixel-art city map with its own clock and weather.
  • Cosmetic-only premium. The game never sells gold, Actions or gear.
