Text-Based Vampire Games

Text-based vampire games put the story first: you read your hunt, choose your move and imagine the rest. They have been around since the earliest online games, and the best of them are still running.

What a text-based vampire game is

In a text-based game the world is described in words and menus rather than drawn on screen. You see your stats, read what happens when you hunt or fight, and pick your next action. The game is in the decisions: where to hunt, whom to attack, which coven to trust, how to spend what you take.

Where they come from

MUDs (multi-user dungeons) were the first online multiplayer worlds, all text, and vampire themes and roleplay were part of them early on. When the web arrived, the same ideas moved into the browser as PBBGs, persistent browser-based games, where you play a few turns a day in a world that keeps going without you.

The mid-2000s brought a wave of text-based vampire browser games. Vampire Genesis's own line started then, with Vampire Freaks: The Game in 2004 and Blood of the Age in 2005, and continued through Coven Wars in 2010.

Why people still play them

  • They fit into a day. A few minutes on a break is a real session.
  • They run anywhere. Any browser, any phone, no download, low data.
  • They are about people. Covens, rivalries, alliances and roleplay matter more when graphics aren't the point.
  • They last. A persistent world with no resets means years of history, for the game and for your vampire.

Text-based, and then some

Many of today's vampire PBBGs keep the text-game heart and add art on top. Vampire Genesis is still quick to play from menus, but the hunt now has creatures and combat stances, every familiar has an animated pixel sprite, and Death Valley is a pixel-art city with its own clock and weather where every lit window belongs to a player.

You still get what makes text games work: short sessions, deep systems and a community that has played together for years. You can hunt on expeditions, fight coven wars for the city's districts, duel in the arena, craft, and collect familiars.

Questions

Are text-based vampire games still played?

Yes. Several have run for well over a decade. They suit short sessions on any device, and their communities are often very loyal.

What is the difference between a MUD and a PBBG?

A MUD is a real-time text world you usually connect to with a client. A PBBG (persistent browser-based game) runs in a web browser and is usually turn- or action-based, so you can play a few minutes at a time.

Is Vampire Genesis a text-based game?

It began text-first and still plays quickly from menus, but it now adds pixel art, animated familiars and a pixel-art city map. It is free and runs in any browser.
